    The VESPA Project: Virtual Reality Interventions for Neurocognitive and Developmental Disorders

    VESPA is a financed project supported by the Sicilian Regional Research and Development funds, and it is structured by the development, research and validation of Virtual Reality (VR) based application for the diagnosis and treatment of neurocognitive conditions. In particular, this article presents its characteristics, referred to as the first (2013-2015) and second (2021-ongoing) generations of VESPA, with particular reference to literature regarding the VR technology application and development, the VR treatment of neurocognitive conditions and prior versions of this intervention. Through a comprehensive review of the research conducted over the last 5 years, evidence has emerged supporting VESPA’s aim and scopes, highlighting how the application of VR can be considered to add value to typical rehabilitation/therapeutic paths. VESPA project generations are then presented in detail, including specific session/task battery characteristics, 2.5D, 3D and 5D typologies, system usability and architecture and pathological domain-based dynamics and features. The discussion about VESPA will highlight the current advantages along with limitations and future directions

    A Credibility Assessment Plan for an In Silico Model that Predicts the Dose–Response Relationship of New Tuberculosis Treatments

    Tuberculosis is one of the leading causes of death in several developing countries and a public health emergency of international concern. In Silico Trials can be used to support innovation in the context of drug development reducing the duration and the cost of the clinical experimentations, a particularly desirable goal for diseases such as tuberculosis. The agent-based Universal Immune System Simulator was used to develop an In Silico Trials environment that can predict the dose–response of new therapeutic vaccines against pulmonary tuberculosis, supporting the optimal design of clinical trials. But before such in silico methodology can be used in the evaluation of new treatments, it is mandatory to assess the credibility of this predictive model. This study presents a risk-informed credibility assessment plan inspired by the ASME V&V 40‐2018 technical standard. Based on the selected context of use and regulatory impact of the technology, a detailed risk analysis is described together with the definition of all the verification and validation activities and related acceptability criteria. The work provides an example of the first steps required for the regulatory evaluation of an agent-based model used in the context of drug development

    Suppression Mental Questionnaire App: a mobile web service-based application for automated real-time evaluation of adolescent and adult suppression

    The Suppression Mental Questionnaire System (mobile App, Web-Services, Cloud...) acts as a bridge among dynamic psychology, the cognitive studies, and modern information and telecommunication technologies (ICT). The adoption of digital tools speeds clinical investigations on defense mechanisms and makes clinical trials easier by reducing needed effort for manual scoring. It also enables faster and deeper research practices, also more appropriate to the times by enabling the real-time transfer of the results to digital archives  for statistical and psychometrical purposes. Reliability of the scale was evaluated by using Cronbach's alpha; this numerical coefficient of reliability was calculated for the three factors and for the two psychodiagnostic tools. The digital tool melts together scalability and availability provided by the mobile application, power and flexibility provided by Web 2.0 portal. The statistical analysis show a good reliability of the scale and of different factors. Differences related to the factors are considered possible on the basis of the current literature.Mobile Operating Systems, Internet, Web 2.0, and the considerable computing capabilities provided by Clouds are powerful combinations of tools able to provide real-time Open Data/Results to scientists and users, and to spread up the use of the questionnaire all over the world

    Características geoquímicas de las cuñas de hielo en Puerto Deseado (Santa Cruz, Argentina): implicancias paleoambientales y cronológicas

    Ground wedge structures of cryogenic origin are common in the Quaternary sediments along the coast of the Patagonia, and their formation is related to climatic cold events experienced by this area in the Late Quaternary. The infilling sediments of two wedges generations were analyzed in the area of Puerto Deseado. Bulk chemistry (major elements), X-ray diffraction (XRD), morphoscopic observations with Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) and chemical analyses of volcanic glass shards were undertaken to provide indications about infilling sediment provenience, along with chronological constraint for wedge formation. Bulk chemistry and XRD patterns indicate a significant SiO2- enriched composition of the sediment infilling compared to the most of the loess deposits of the North Argentina and the present day dust originated in Patagonia. This was interpreted as due to the nature of the bedrock present over the Deseado Massif. SEM morphoscopic characteristics of glass shards evidence typical aeolian reworking features, with impact structures and indented edges of the volcanic fragments. Chemical analyses of the glass shards indicate that they were probably generated by the H0 eruption (17,300-17,400 cal yr BP) of the Hudson volcano. Volcanological data indicate that H0 eruption dispersed toward NE, but volcanic glasses were available for reworking due to a WNW component in the western wind direction. Over the Deseado Massif structural high the glass shards mixed with sediments enriched in SiO2, and were eventually deflated further to SE reaching the present coastal area and infilling the frost cracks. The age of the glass shards (17,300-17,400 cal yr BP) and that of the sandy layer affected by cryogenic structures (14,670±750 yr BP) well constrain to the Late Glacial both wedge generations.Las cuñas de hielo son estructuras comunes en sedimentos cuaternarios a lo largo de la costa patagónica, y su formación está relacionada con eventos climáticos fríos experimentados en esta área en el Cuaternario Tardío. Se analizaron sedimentos que rellenan dos generaciones de cuñas de hielo en la zona de Puerto Deseado. Análisis químicos de elementos mayores, difractometría de rayos X (DRX), observaciones con microscopio electrónico de barrido (SEM) y análisis químico de fragmentos de vidrio volcánico contenidos en el sedimento que rellena las cuñas proporcionaron información sobre la precedencia del relleno, además de inferir antecedentes cronológicos sobre su formación. La composición química del sedimento y la difracción de rayos X indican una composición enriquecida en SiO2 en comparación con la mayoría de los depósitos de loess del norte de Argentina y el polvo actual originado en la Patagonia. Esto fue interpretado como producto de la influencia de las rocas que constituyen el macizo del Deseado. Las características morfológicas de los fragmentos de vidrio evidencian rasgos típicos de retrabajo eólico, con presencia de estructuras de impacto y bordes dentados. Los análisis químicos de los fragmentos de vidrio son compatibles con un origen en la erupción H0 (17.300-17.400 cal yr BP) del volcán Hudson. Datos volcanológicos indican que la erupción H0 originó una pluma de dispersión hacia el NE. El material volcánico dispersado por esta erupción quedó disponible para ser retrabajado por una componente WNW de los vientos del W dominantes en la zona. Sobre el macizo del Deseado, los fragmentos de vidrio se mezclaron con sedimentos ricos en SiO2 y fueron adicionalmente, enriquecidos en este elemento hasta alcanzar el área de costa actual, rellenando las cuñas de hielo. La edad de los fragmentos de vidrio (17.300-17.400 cal yr BP) y de la capa arenosa afectada por las estructuras criogénicas (14.670±750 años BP) limitan al glacial tardío la formación de ambas generaciones de cuñas.Centro de Estudios Integrales de la Dinámica Exógen

    Questo rapporto presenta lo stato dell’infrastruttura 3DLab-Sicilia con particolare attenzione sullo stato di avanzamento della realizzazione dei tre laboratori nei nodi del progetto che compongono il Centro di Realtà Virtuale geograficamente distribuito e sulle sequenze (pipeline) di esecuzione di software implementate internamente per la creazione di modelli tridimensionali e scenari immersivi e offerte dal progetto a tutti i possibili utilizzatori esterni. Il documento è organizzato come segue: la Sezione 2 introduce lo stato dell’arte relativamente alle soluzioni di Cross Reality (XR, che comprende anche la Realtà Virtuale); la Sezione 3 presenta le caratteristiche e le potenzialità del Centro di Realtà Virtuale di 3DLab-Sicilia; la Sezione 4 presenta gli ulteriori elementi chiave dell’infrastruttura che il progetto mette a disposizione dell’utenza; infine, nelle sezioni 5 e 6 vengono forniti i dettagli delle pipeline software supportate, rispettivamente, per servizi di utilità generale e per servizi specifici per gli use case del progetto

    Signals from the deep-sea: Genetic structure, morphometric analysis, and ecological implications of Cyclothone braueri (Pisces, Gonostomatidae) early life stages in the Central Mediterranean Sea

    Cyclothone braueri (Stomiiformes, Gonostomatidae) is a widely distributed fish inhabiting the mesopelagic zone of marine tropical and temperate waters. Constituting one of the largest biomasses of the ocean, C. braueri is a key element in most of the ecological processes occurring in the twilight layer. We focused on the ecological processes linked to early life stages in relation to marine pelagic environmental drivers (temperature, salinity, food availability and geostrophic currents) considering different regions of the Central Mediterranean Sea. A multivariate morphometric analysis was carried out using six parameters with the aim of discerning different larval morphotypes, while a fragment of 367 bp representing the 12S ribosomal RNA gene was used to perform molecular analyses aimed at determining the intraspecific genetic variability. Analysis highlighted two geographically distinct morphotypes not genetically discernible and related to the different nutritional conditions due to spatial heterogeneities in terms of temperature and food availability. The body depth (BD) emerged as an appropriate morphometric parameter to detect the larval condition in this species. Molecular analysis highlighted a moderate genetic divergence in the fish population, showing the recurrence of two phylogroups not geographically separated

    Azimuthal anisotropy of charged jet production in root s(NN)=2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions

    We present measurements of the azimuthal dependence of charged jet production in central and semi-central root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb-Pb collisions with respect to the second harmonic event plane, quantified as nu(ch)(2) (jet). Jet finding is performed employing the anti-k(T) algorithm with a resolution parameter R = 0.2 using charged tracks from the ALICE tracking system. The contribution of the azimuthal anisotropy of the underlying event is taken into account event-by-event. The remaining (statistical) region-to-region fluctuations are removed on an ensemble basis by unfolding the jet spectra for different event plane orientations independently. Significant non-zero nu(ch)(2) (jet) is observed in semi-central collisions (30-50% centrality) for 20 <p(T)(ch) (jet) <90 GeV/c. The azimuthal dependence of the charged jet production is similar to the dependence observed for jets comprising both charged and neutral fragments, and compatible with measurements of the nu(2) of single charged particles at high p(T). Good agreement between the data and predictions from JEWEL, an event generator simulating parton shower evolution in the presence of a dense QCD medium, is found in semi-central collisions.     K0S and Λ production in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN−−−−√=2.76  TeV

    The ALICE measurement of K0S and Λ production at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at sNN−−−√=2.76  TeV is presented. The transverse momentum (pT) spectra are shown for several collision centrality intervals and in the pT range from 0.4  GeV/c (0.6  GeV/c for Λ) to 12  GeV/c. The pT dependence of the Λ/K0S ratios exhibits maxima in the vicinity of 3  GeV/c, and the positions of the maxima shift towards higher pT with increasing collision centrality. The magnitude of these maxima increases by almost a factor of three between most peripheral and most central Pb-Pb collisions. This baryon excess at intermediate pT is not observed in pp interactions at s√=0.9  TeV and at s√=7  TeV. Qualitatively, the baryon enhancement in heavy-ion collisions is expected from radial flow. However, the measured pT spectra above 2  GeV/c progressively decouple from hydrodynamical-model calculations. For higher values of pT, models that incorporate the influence of the medium on the fragmentation and hadronization processes describe qualitatively the pT dependence of the Λ/K0S ratio
